aadhaar: The deadline for linking PAN to the Aadhaar card is March 31: how to proceed

The deadline for linking your permanent account number (STOVE) with Adhar the map is just around the corner. According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), you can link your PAN card to the Aadhaar card until March 31. For those unaware, in 2017 CBDT announced that all Indian citizens must link their PAN card to the Aadhaar card. This decision allows the income tax department to detect any form of tax evasion and also helps reduce the issuance of several PAN cards that many use to defraud the government.

It should be noted that the earliest deadline issued by CBDT to link PAN card and Aadhaar card was August 5, 2017, however, the department kept extending the deadline due to various reasons. The latest deadline issued by CBDT is March 31, 2022.

Although you can still file tax returns without linking the PAN card and Aadhaar card, the tax department will not process your returns until you complete the linking. Failure to bind PAN card and Aadhaar before the given deadline can also result in a penalty of Rs 10,000 and apart from that your PAN card will be inoperative.
