IHIT identifies Maple Ridge shooting victim, connection to gang conflict unclear

Homicide investigators have identified the victim of a brazen daylight shooting in Maple Ridge on Saturday that left one person dead.

Police believe Darr Khunkhun, 41, was the victim of a targeted attack.

Khunkhun has no criminal record, but it remains unclear if his death is related to the ongoing conflict between gangs in the Lower Mainland, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Homicide investigators are working with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit to determine possible gang ties.

Police were called to the Olympians parking lot at 226 Street and Lougheed Highway around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to “numerous” calls reporting gunshots, according to Ridge Meadows RCMP.

Khunkhun was found with gunshot wounds at the scene, but despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.

Constables responded to “numerous” calls for gunfire and arrived at the scene to find a man with gunshot wounds.

The man died from his injuries at the site.

Police said early evidence suggests the shooting was not random, but it is unclear whether it is linked to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.
