STMicroelectronics Industrial Smart Sensor Evaluation Kit Accelerates Design with IO-Link Transceiver and STM32 MCU – EEJournal

Geneva, December 8, 2021 – Featuring a slim 45.8mm x 8.3mm main board, the STMicroelectronics STEVAL-IOD04KT1 industrial sensor kit simplifies the development of compact IO-Link sensors (IEC 61131-9) for a point-to-point independent of the field bus. -point of two-way communication.

Main board integrates STM32G0 microcontroller with ST L6364W IO-Link transceiver, IIS2MDC high precision 3-axis digital output magnetometer and ISM330DHCX iNEMO ™ inertial module with machine learning core. The compact dimensions, enabled by the tiny chip package sizes of the L6364W, in 2.5mm x 2.5mm CSP19, and the STM32G0 in 2.3mm x 2.5mm WLCSP25, allow for an extremely small sensor package . Equipped with a 4-pole M8 industrial connector, the card connects to any IO-Link main controller that supports IO-Link 1.1. A 10-pin extension connector allows additional detection modalities to be added.

The STM32Cube companion software package, STSW-IOD04K, provides the IO-Link Device Description (IODD) file, ST’s proprietary IO-Link demo stack, and L6364W and MEMS sensor management routines. The software, which enables hot-activation, contains libraries that aid in the development of various types of sensors, and is designed for easy integration with additional X-CUBE software to further extend the functionality of the sensor.

By managing the IO-Link communication, the L6364W transceiver alleviates the workload of the STM32G0. The integrated circuit implements an IO-Link compliant electrical interface and digital functionality, including wake-up recognition, 15-byte data buffer, and quartz-free IO-Link clock fetch. Surge protection up to ± 2.5kV, ESD protection and reverse polarity protection are all built-in, eliminating the need for users to design additional components and also saving space on printed circuit boards and bill of materials costs. With on-chip 3.3V and 5.0V LDOs and a digitally configurable step-down DC / DC converter, the L6364W can deliver up to 50mA of charging current and helps developers meet efficiency requirements and of CEM of their application.

The L6364W is part of ST’s integrated circuit family that provides a comprehensive set of solutions to simplify the implementation of the IO-Link physical layer, which also includes the L6360 IO-Link control-side transceiver and circuits integrated IO-Link devices L6362A and L6364Q.

The STEVAL-IOD04KT1 kit comes with everything needed to quickly connect the sensor for evaluation and use, including an IO-Link M8-M12 adapter cable and STLINK-V3MINI programmer. The kit is available now on the ST eStore for $ 95.55.
